Just a few years ago, I would see Acer in places like Best Buy, but I really didn’t think much of it. To be honest, I thought it was a generic brand or something. Thanks to the purchase of Gateway, and aggressive campaigns in retail stores around the US and Europe, it is becoming a household name.

“It’s a pretty amazing transition in market leadership by Acer,” said Loren Loverde, the program director of IDC’s PC Tracker. “It’s reflective of the changes in form factors and channels and pricing–the way we’ve shifted to lower cost portables, particularly in consumer and retail, which is where Dell was not as strong.”

Speaking of Acer, they announced two new products today: The Liquid Smartphone and the Acer One Netbook.

Acer Liquid is a touchscreen smartphone running Android version 1.6, formerly codenamed Donut and the latest upgrade to the software. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset inside the smartphone provides processing power and other capabilities.

Some interesting new features include a camera that saves the location and time of the picture taken, thanks to the on board GPS receiver, and the phone will be using HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) to surf the interwebs.

The Acer One Netbook is pretty interesting. There are two OS on board here, Android and Windows XP. Android is basically for instant web browsing, it takes about 18 seconds to boot up and you’re on Google..or better yet Nerd Salad. The main reason Windows is also there is they wanted to give you the option to use Internet Explorer, which has 65.7 percent share of the Web browser market as of September. You will be able to switch OS’s by just clicking a button.

Here are the specs, according to it’s Amazon pre-order page:

The Aspire One with Android has a 10.1-inch screen, an Intel Atom N280 microprocessor, 1GB of DDR2 (double data rate, second generation) DRAM and a 160GB hard-disk drive, as well as a 6-cell battery for long-lasting power. It can be booted in either Android or Windows XP Home, according to the sales data on Amazon.com.

Aspire One will retail for $349.99.
